“As virtual social activity increases, dependence on physical roommates and their developing inability to operate in normal ‘physical’ social conditions such as ‘dinner’ decreases, generating the need to adopt new methods for gathering persons for communal food consumption in the hopes of ‘increased social exchange’.”

As the extended thesis term begins I joke around with some personal things to start getting into the mood for writing. The last two terms for me I have been in ‘hermit mode’ which can be credited to the perceived ‘individuality’ of a thesis project and other various circumstances. However, I am usually regarded as a very outgoing and social person and I now realize that what is missing most in my work currently is the constant feedback and development of my work through my peers. This connection is of course facilitated by social activities for which in the past I was organizing in the attempt to have each class equally represented. Because my social activity has decreased so has the drive in my work.

I’ll try to use Facebook to lure over potential diners for ‘increased social interaction’…

Developing in Section

Lately I am sketching out various ideas in this way, In the end this sectional idea will be represented in a large scale sectional model.

My project is best summarized in longitudinal section, showing not only the new procession which carves up and through the existing building (in progress) but more importantly the connection between library and the shared edge of the institutional ‘city’ and the adjacent city - made possible through an extruded circulation plane, intersecting existing residence buildings.

Transverse section drawn through the connection between the plane and existing building, looking away from the existing library (North) towards the shared edge (Coburg Avenue), notice connection down to tunnel system. All major vertical circulation is re organized to the threshold between the existing and ‘new’ library.

Lately I have been referencing the work of Oliver Laric, mainly his video work titled ‘Versions’.

I was recently asked about my thoughts concerning the video and thought I would format it in a more formal post.

I see a lot of connections to architectural thought when viewing Versions (especially because this is my field of study), but these particular connections begin to talk about a more far reaching idea on ‘reference’. An idea of how we access information and apply it to produce knowledge - concepts which are central to my thesis project and the adaption of the Killam Library.

Architecturally, and with ‘hype’ aside, I would relate Versions’ to BIGs Manifesto ‘Yes is More’ (A product of OMA). Its the realization and awareness of where things come from, the progression or evolution of ideas and the physical things which represent them (historical context). With the now extreme amounts of content and access of information the idea that ‘nothing is new’ becomes evident. knowledge is always created by re appropriating past knowledge and applying it in the present condition reference. for me Versions emphasizes this idea.

Updating, Blog Layout and Content

Over the course of the week I will be updating my website and portfolio to take an active break from my thesis work.

The ‘blog’ will be formatted more as a simple news feed, which will link to an image based ‘mood board’ displaying different content I view online etc. both of which are powered by tumblr

Past design projects will be updated with refined representations, in preparation for job applications

Potential glass spec for the Halifax central library. Letters in shapes and densities generated based on sun angles / light etc.

I would have preferred to call up Inside Outside. Being in the middle of a building construction culture embracing modernist construction methods (and distorting to their limits with economic efficiency) the blind or curtain becomes architecture.

Especially with all the thought they put into the pieces.

( I have never thought or written this before, but this is they key)

Where is critical thought put into our built environment this is architecture - no matter what the final form - in this case curtains / landscape.
