Hey! I worked on this project while I worked at Henning Larsen, the building was complete but I assembled some presentation drawings for magazines and press release. I am yet to read the interview but will update the post later.
Reading this article is very interesting when first you understand the players involved and the unique context surrounding the writing. Rem Koolhaas’ first line of work was as a reporter. Here he gained his critical perspective and researching skills which went on to create the foundation for his architectural work. Spiegel is one of Germany’s leaders in news reporting, for this interview they chose the setting of their new headquarters at the brand new Hafen City Development, which OMA is also a part of along with many other architects. Last year while working at Henning Larsen Architects I had the oppritunity of working on presentation drawings for this project after it had been completed so I studied the concept briefly. I understood the moves - it made sense. An atrium, a public ground floor, a piaza is formed in front. It is imagined that this will be a magnificent public space, dwarfed by the height of the building. Regardless of this particular buildings motives (and Rem’s more than accurate comments on it) we can look at the development as a whole. By experience I naturally relate it closely to the Media Hafen in Dusseldorf where I am currently studying. An old industrial port is converted for commerce and ’star’ architects are invited to litter the place with all their big magnificent concepts and ultimately the true human experience is lost. The Media Hafen for large part remains vacant, only attracting the business people who work there.
I will now go on to look closer at OMAs proposal for the Hafen City Project while relating it directly to another of their works I have experienced in Germany at the Zolleverein Kohlenwasche in Essen , where I feel, the old industrial coal building, the center of the community, was converted very elegantly.
I have also been in Italy for the past week, a lot to post about, including some new books I have been reading concerning advancments in architectural education.
